Writing and Homework / Fire Alone (song lyrics)
« on: January 03, 2018, 05:54:21 PM »
Always thought the Warriors series lends itself well to power metal, so I decided to write a song about it for my band! As the genre goes this is probably the most stereotypical thing I've ever written, but I'm pleased with how it turned out. It's in F# minor (but still upbeat and cheery-sounding despite the minor key), and in my mind it sounds roughly like a cross between Gloryhammer's 'Universe on Fire' and Hammerfall's 'Fury of the Wild' with Noora from Battle Beast on vocals.

Also, I'm not sure whether you're allowed to use quotes from books in songs without asking permission first so might have to attempt to get in touch with the Erins if that is likely to be an issue :P Anyway, hope you enjoy!

Fire Alone

Turn your deep blue eyes skyward
There's a message in the night
A missive of a flame
Whispered in stellar light
Turn your wandering gaze downward
There's a villain in the midst
Tooth and claw will rage
Your name has made the list

We are bound by ancient blood
Celestial prophecy
Tonight the stars foretell
His flames will set us free

From the tiger's fury
From the rising storm
From the scourge of the city
Fire alone will save us
From the pack who hunt us
From a culture's death
From a broken tyrant
Fire alone will save us

Hear the forest air calling
For it breathes inside of you
The fabric of your past
Forever torn in two
A leader at the helm falling
To a traitor now exposed
The dogs of war unleashed
A deadly bloodstream flows

We are cats of marsh and moor
The wild runs through our veins
Finding peace in full moon's light
But the battleground remains

(Repeat Chorus)

(Spoken) "Four will become two. Lion and tiger will meet in battle, and blood will rule the forest..."

(Repeat Chorus)

Random Babble / Card for Vicky
« on: October 24, 2017, 04:23:38 PM »
As many of you will have seen, Vicky Holmes made the following post on her Facebook today:

Quote from: Vicky Holmes:1/3 of the Erin Hunters!
Hello my lovelies

As you may have noticed, I've been quiet for a while. Not that I don't keep an eye on you, loving your passion and insane Warriors knowledge as always. I'm going to be quiet for a little longer, but I'm popping up to let you know why.

Darling Clanmates, I have been diagnosed with cancer. I had lots of surgery in August, and now I am beginning six months of chemotherapy. This will hopefully lead to a complete recovery, hooray! So please don't worry about me. I'm feeling calm and strong, and as always, there are moments of fabulous humour.

When I learned I'd have to have chemotherapy, I went out and had all my hair cut off, in readiness for losing it and being bald for the winter. Only then did I find out that the chemotherapy I'm having doesn't make your hair fall out... But check out my new short hair! I love it, and might keep it like this forever.

I feel very tired, and the chemo drugs make me hideously sick, but I'm not in pain. I'm counting the days until I can ride my crazy horse again, and meanwhile I'm watching the leaves change colour outside my window, and revelling in the beauty of Autumn.

All is well. StarClan lights my path, always.

All my love
Vicky xxx

She could do with our support right now, so I thought it might be a nice gesture if we all hand-wrote encouraging messages for Vicky, scanned them in, and put them together into a sort of online card to send to her on behalf of Warrior's Wish. If anyone wants to include a little drawing of a warrior cat with their message as well that would be much appreciated! :)

If you want to include a message but don't want it to be handwritten or don't have access to a scanner, let me know and I'll include it in some sort of pretty font for you.

I've also made this drawing to go at the top of the card:

(Thought it'd be appropriate to go with a theme of healing, so the three cats are Spottedleaf, Yellowfang, and Leafpool; and the plants are sage and cowslip, which both represent healing in the language of flowers)

Writing and Homework / The Seasons of Pembrokeshire
« on: August 31, 2017, 06:19:55 PM »
Bit of writing I just did about life in my home county.

The Seasons of Pembrokeshire

Little Tourist Season (April-June): The locals start to emerge from their houses. Business owners wish each other a happy new year. Fulmars and razorbills take up residence along the cliffs and get ignored in favour of puffins. Locals take walks while they've still got the free time and admire the familiar pink dottings of thrift. A few tourists migrate into the area, mostly either bird enthusiasts or city folk happy to be visiting at an affordable time of year but displeased by the lack of wi-fi signal. The weather is deceptively chilly.

Tourist Season (July-August): This is it. Everyone to your stations. The tourists are upon us. Let the seven-day work weeks and traffic queues commence. Yellow raincoats and nautical stripes dominate the pavements. Tenby is awash with buckets and spades and sticks of rock of every colour imaginable. The coast path becomes a snake of walkers. Every Saturday, a conveyer of almost-gleaming Range Rovers leaves St. Davids, faced by the oncoming legion of scruffy older vehicles as the county's quiet working class heads out to clean cottages that only their managers could afford to stay in. Money is squirreled away. The clouds clear and the sky puts on a blazing show of warmth. It seems that nature, too, has joined in this great production, donning its deep blue summer attire and lining the cliffs with heather - until a disappointed family returns to shore, wondering why the inconsiderate puffins insisted on leaving before the schools broke up. Cars buzz like honeybees towards the County Showground. The undulating melodies of jazz float through the cafes and streets of Fishguard. Someone, somewhere, inevitably follows a Sat Nav into the sea. This is when Pembrokeshire truly comes alive; the activity builds in a crescendo, and the coast becomes busier, livelier, louder, until...

The Great Exodus (day after August Bank Holiday): Families pack up and hurry home to get their last-minute school uniforms and pencil cases. Second-homeowners return to Oxfordshire in droves. The richer locals smile and pat their comfortably padded pockets; the poorer ones furiously budget for the months ahead. And then, in an instant, all falls eerily quiet.

Indian Summer (September-October): The county collectively flops onto the sofa and has a quiet cup of tea. Bus users lament the loss of Sunday services. The sky remains bright - rewarding its children for a job well done - and a breeze clears the air of its stuffiness. The sands of Newgale and Broad Haven become paler, having lost their dense patterns of footprints. The odd coach trundles in and out, leaving a sea of half-finished cream teas in its wake. Locals become explorers, venturing to their favourite obscure beaches and revelling in solitude upon finding them empty. Fluffy seals appear in pebbled coves as their sleeker parents' inquisitive heads pop out of the sea like whiskered periscopes.

Hibernation Period (November-March): Rainy days begin to outnumber clear ones. Seaside resorts become ghost towns. The auks and the middle class have left for southern climes. The braver of the local hikers embrace the horizontal rain. Photographers head to the Preselis to catch the fleeting snow and the green splendour of the northern lights. Lake Newgale forms. Knotless threads wish for the bustle of the summer, knowing that by that time they will once again crave the winter's solitude...

Art Nook / Cats and Whatnot
« on: August 30, 2017, 01:54:17 PM »
Drawn some fan-art but thought it'd be best to make an art thread rather than put it on the Fanworks board (as I also draw stuff that's not Warriors-related so this way it can all be kept in one place). Gatherings are one of my favourite things to read about in the Warriors series as I love seeing how cats from different Clans interact without the constraints of borders.

This one takes place somewhere between The Darkest Hour and Midnight though there are a couple of inconsistencies that make it difficult to place exactly when. Probably should have written up a character list before drawing the cats xD

Leaders (clockwise): Firestar, Tallstar, Leopardstar, Blackstar
First row: Heavystep, Sorrelpaw, Rowanclaw, Mudclaw
Second row: Brackenfur, Cedarheart, Onewhisker, Feathertail, Littlecloud, Cinderpelt
Third row: Mousefur, Blackclaw, Whitetail, Sandstorm, Greystripe, Mosspelt
Front row: Cloudtail, Crowpaw, Tawnypelt, Brambleclaw

Accidentally drew the leaders a bit too big in relation to the other cats. And drew the sunset on the wrong side (east rather than west). Will have to watch out for that next time :P

Also a couple of my designs are slightly different from those explicitly described in the books (e.g. I always imagined Tawnypelt as a torby). Very grateful to the wiki for including character descriptions as I'd never realised Heavystep was a brown tabby - I always thought he was grey for some reason! My own fault for not reading the allegiances in enough detail :P

Archives / Dustfeather of ShadowClan (NPC)
« on: September 02, 2016, 04:05:35 PM »
NAME: Dustfeather
AGE: 20 moons (or somewhere around there if this doesn't fit with the timeline); born in newleaf
GENDER: Female (not neutered)
CLAN: ShadowClan
RANK: Warrior
DESCRIPTION: Dustfeather is a tall, slender, long-legged cat, though her slight frame is masked somewhat by her thick fur. She is a lilac tabby with a classic tabby pattern. Her face is narrow and angular and she has long whiskers, giving her a slight advantage in perception. Additionally she has a long, fluffy tail and slightly tufty ears.

Her eyes are a pale greyish-green and her nose dark pink. She does not have any noticeable scars - any she may have are obscured by her fur. Her small paws have become slightly darkened due to spending much of her time walking on boggy ground, but she makes sure to wash as frequently as possible to prevent her fur from matting. When in camp she often sits with her feet tucked neatly underneath her.
PERSONALITY: Dustfeather is calm and quiet for the most part, but dislikes confrontation. She has little patience for drama and unnecessary fighting and will tend to stay out of disputes - sometimes to the annoyance of her Clanmates. She enjoys being helpful and is more interested in practical duties such as den-building and hunting than more interactive activities such as border patrols or sharing tongues. However, she does have a hidden whimsical side and secretly delights in stories and legends, sometimes hiding so she can listen covertly to the elders' storytelling.

Dustfeather enjoys knowledge and particularly likes learning the names of all the plants, animals, and insects in her territory. She prefers to stay low to the ground and feels vulnerable in trees and high-up places.

Although socialising does not come particularly naturally to her, Dustfeather is close with those who have helped her, and eager to make her parents, leader, and former mentor proud, though she often lacks confidence in her abilities. She excels at stealth and observation, but struggles with force and agility. She is moderately spiritual, believing in StarClan but cautious about interpreting potential omens as such.
HISTORY: Dustkit was born in newleaf as part of a small litter - herself and her brother Kestrelkit - to a queen named Bramblefur and a tom named Ashcloud. Both were kind and supportive of their kits, though Kestrelkit, being the more vocal of the two, would often command more attention. Food was plentiful and they were fortunate to spend their kithood in a peaceful and prosperous time. Less adventurous than her brother, Dustkit was less inclined to wander off and get into mischief, but when she did venture into the camp she would often spend time observing and talking to the medicine cat and learning about the plants that the marsh had to offer. Unfortunately for Duskit, her dreams of becoming a medicine cat herself remained impossible, as the current one already had an apprentice.

Resigning herself to making the best of an undesirable situation, Dustpaw became the first apprentice of a young warrior named Rainpelt. Due to Rainpelt's inexperience in mentoring, she quickly became impatient and exasperated when Dustpaw struggled with fighting and hunting techniques, and would often lash out at her and patronise her. This carried on for a few weeks before Kestrelpaw urged her to request a different mentor. Not wishing to cause a fuss, Dustpaw eventually relented and asked the Clan leader to switch. Rainpelt, upon being informed of this, was initially furious, but upon realising how she had treated Dustpaw, apologised and agreed to be more patient with her next apprentice. Dustpaw was given instead to Frogtail, a senior warrior.

Despite Dustpaw not being very physically strong, Frogtail managed to identify where her talent lay - namely in stealth and creeping around unseen and unheard. As she gradually became more confident in her abilities, her warrior training began to pick up, and where she had fallen behind the other apprentices she now felt more able to catch up.

Dustpaw managed to avoid a bout of greencough that hit the Clan during that leafbare, but her brother was not so lucky, and died before he was able to complete his training. Although they had not been particularly close, she still mourned for him and became very anxious now that the pressure to make her parents proud lay squarely on her. Bramblefur and Ashcloud's loss was felt greatly and even at Dustpaw's warrior ceremony, her success was somewhat overshadowed by her parents' wishes that both their kits could have been there.

Nonetheless, Dustpaw was relieved to have earned her warrior name - Dustfeather - the suffix a reference to her light-footedness. She remained close with her former mentor Frogtail, and although he retired shortly after, she would still often visit him in the elders' den to report on her progress as a warrior. She and Rainpelt, although slightly awkward around one another, were able to speak to each other civilly.

Dustfeather's first experience of battle was during a fight with an invading group of rogue cats, in which she sustained only minor injuries but was criticised by her Clanmates for not engaging more with the attackers. Since then she has fortunately managed to avoid getting into too many conflicts, and when on patrol, prefers diplomatic negotiation to impulsive physical attacks. This has created friction with some of her more temperamental Clanmates.

Dustfeather still hopes that she may be able to train as a medicine cat if the opportunity were ever to arise - but doesn't like to admit this, as it may be misinterpreted as wishing ill on the current medicine cats. She has no particular interest in having a mate or kits as may jeopardise her chances of becoming a medicine cat.

Leaving / Very busy few weeks ahead
« on: September 01, 2016, 05:03:35 PM »
May have to disappear from the forum for a bit over the next few weeks - got a trip to the Forest of Dean followed by a gig in London followed by a friend coming to stay followed by moving away, interspersed with job-hunting and trying to find somewhere to live that will let me get a cat.

In other words I'll probably be very busy and end up missing out on a lot of the new Clan activities and stuff, but I'll try to stay in touch when I can :)

Ww Fanfictions / "The Wisher" (poem)
« on: August 13, 2016, 10:53:57 AM »
(Having to repost as the original thread got deleted when DS was sorting out security and stuff - if anyone left a reply, please leave another as I'd like to see what people think :3)

A parody of Poe's "The Raven", inspired by a conversation on Skype, and dedicated to @rihannasjorts and @lavender :) Works best if your fruit censors are switched off, as some words have been deliberately fruited :P

Once upon a midnight dreary, while I posted a fan theory,
Over many a quaint and curious volume of warrior cat lore,
While I fangirled, over-hyping, suddenly there came a typing,
As of someone gently Skyping, Skyping at my chamber door.
"'Tis some fruitposter," I muttered, "Skyping at my chamber door -
Only this, and nothing more."

Ah, distinctly I remember it was in the bleak December
And each festive forum member wrought its ghost upon the floor.
Eagerly I wished the morrow; - vainly I had sought to borrow
"Fire and Ice" to ease my sorrow - sorrow for the lost Lavendore -
For the rare and punny maiden whom StarClan name Lavendore -
Nameless here for evermore.

And the silken sad uncertain rustling of each pixelled curtain
Glittered - glistened with the graphics of a website circa '04;
So that now, to still the beating of my heart, I stood repeating
"'Tis some OF kid entreating login at my chamber door -
Some role-playing newbie entreating login at my chamber door; -
This it is, and nothing more."

Presently my keys grew stronger; hesitating then no longer,
"Hello," said I, "my dearies, truly your forgiveness I implore;
But the fact is I was napping, after at my keyboard tapping
When so faintly you came blapping, blapping at my chamber door,
That I scarce was sure I heard you" - here I opened wide the door; -
Darkstar there, and nothing more.

Deep around that modmin peering, long I stood there wondering, fearing,
Doubting, dreaming dreams no medicine cat dared to dream before;
But the server still was broken; Darkstar, offline, gave no token,
And the only word there spoken was the censored word, "You kumquat!"
This I whispered, and a blueberry murmured back the word, "You kumquat!"
Merely this and nothing more.

Back into the chamber turning, apprentices around me burning,
Soon again I heard a Skyping somewhat louder than before.
"Surely," said I, "surely that is something in the RiverClan camp;
Let me see then, what's in the damp, and this mystery explore -
Let my whiskers twitch a moment and this mystery explore; -
'tis WindClan and nothing more!"

Open here I flung the shutter, when, with many a meme and flutter,
In there stepped a jorts-clad Wisher of the v3 days of yore.
Not the least word did he say, nor a minute stop or stay,
But with a .jpg of Pepe, perched above my chamber door -
Perched above a bust of Firestar just above my chamber door -
Perched, and sat, and nothing more.

Then this denim-clothed man beguiling my sad fancy into smiling
By the grave and stern decorum of Confessions on v4,
"Though thy underoos be short and revealing, thou," I said, "are tall when kneeling;
You'll hit your head upon the ceiling, perching there above my door -
Tell me what thy username is on the forest's Sunningrocked shore!"
Quoth the Wisher, "Nevermore."

Much I marvelled this ungainly boy to hear The Discourse™ so plainly,
Though his memes but little meaning - little relevancy bore;
For we cannot help agreeing that no living human being
Ever yet was blessed with seeing memes above his chamber door -
Lolcat or doge above the sculptured bust above his chamber door,
With such name as 'Nevermore'.

But the Wisher, sitting lonely on the feline bust, spoke only
That one word, as if a new-born meme he now wished to outpour.
Nothing further then he uttered - not a frayed thread then he flutttered -
Till I scarcely more than muttered "Other friends have worn jorts before -
On the morrow he will wear them, perhaps a new pair from the store."
Then the man said, "Nevermore."

Startled at the topic broken by reply so oddly spoken,
"Doubtless," said I, "what he utters is within the five-word law,
Caught by some moderating master, bringing ban-hammered disaster,
Followed fast and followed faster till he 10% warning bore -
Till the dirges sung to Brian that melancholy burden bore
Of "Never-nevermore"."

But the underoos fan still beguiling all my sad soul into smiling,
Straight I wheeled a spinny chair in front of jorts and bust and door;
Then, upon the Highrock sinking, I betook myself to linking
fruitpost onto fruitpost, thinking what this ominous lad of yore -
What this raucous, chatty, lively, and spontaneous lad of yore
Meant in posting, "Nevermore."

This I sat engaged in guessing, although no keystroke expressing
To the boy whose fiery eyes now burned on Pictures Are Fun once more;
This and more I sat divining, with my laptop screen reclining
On Confessions I was whining of the man I puzzled o'er,
But whose memes and legwear I remained ever confuzzled o'er,
She shall see, ah, nevermore!

Then, methought, the air grew denser, perfumed by a fruity censor
Swung by StarClan cats whose pawsteps padded on the tufted floor.
"Wretch, I cried, "thy Blizz hath lent thee - by these star cats she has sent thee
Pepes, puns, and gifs aplenty from the blog of Lavendore!
Grapefruit, oh grapefruit all thou sent me, and forget lost Lavendore!"
Quoth the Wisher, "Nevermore."

"Spammer!" said I, "thing of evil! - spammer still, if man or devil! -
Whether YouTube sent, or whether OF tossed thee here ashore,
Desolate yet all undaunted, in the Dark Forest enchanted -
On this site by pornbots haunted - tell me truly, I implore -
Are there - are there memes on Tumblr? - tell me - tell me, I implore!"
Quoth the Wisher, "Nevermore."

"Spammer!" said I, "thing of evil! - spammer still, if man or devil! -
By that StarClan that bends above us - by that Blizz we both adore -
Tell me of an online land, with memes as dank as ShadowClan,
Populated by a woman whom the Wishers name Lavendore -
Home to a rare and punny woman, whom the Wishers name Lavendore?"
Quoth the Wisher, "Nevermore."

"Be that word our sign of parting, double-poster!" I shrieked upstarting -
"Get thee back onto the OF and Hidden Clans' Proboards shore!
Leave no Pepe as a token of that lie thou troll hast spoken!
Leave my cat-themed thread unbroken! - quit the bust above my door!
Take thy memes from out my heart, and take thy jorts down off my door!"
Quoth the Wisher, "Nevermore."

And the jorts, never flitting, still are sitting, still are sitting
On the pallid legs of the Wisher just above my chamber door;
And their pockets have all the seaming of a demons' that is dreaming,
And the laptop-light o'er him streaming throws his shadow on the floor;
And the jorts from out that shadow that lie floating on the floor
Shall be lifted - nevermore!

The internet's currently down for my entire house (all 30something rooms) so Foxfur and I won't be able to get online much until it's fixed, which hopefully shouldn't take more than a few days, but could well be longer. I'm preparing myself for thousands of unread messages on the Skype chat xD
