@PinkheartII I'm not sure what exactly you mean by "necessary". No death is ever truly necessary (Whitestorm, Dustpelt, and Longtail come to mind). Hardship is just a part of life for them, and that means cats will die, with or without good reason.

Basically just keep this mind.

One thing that I had really expected to happen was that Slash would kill Gray Wing and that would serve as a catalyst to unite all the groups together against the rogues.

Everything about Path of Stars was perfect.

Except for Gray Wing's death.... that was not okay.

I'm kind of glad that we got a definitive end to his story though.

Latest Release / Thoughts on Path of Stars (Unmarked Spoilers)

-Clear Sky finally owning up to how badly he treated Thunder, even if Thunder isn't ready to forgive him yet, and vowing to be better for his new kits.
-Gray Wing reassures Jagged Peak that his sneaking away from the Tribe and forcing Gray Wing to go after him back in The Sun Trail was ultimately good thing.
-Gray Wing gets to show off his strategic nature by coming up with a successful plan to rescue Star Flower.
-For as much as it's built up, the big final battle never actually happens. It was a nice change after most of the other arcs end with a big confrontation; this one is a more subdued- though no less tense- rescue of one of Gray Wing's and Slate's kits. And Slash is still alive at the end, so I expect he'll still be causing trouble in Moth Flight's vision.
-The Clans taking in the former rogues after Slash abandons them, then all of them defending each other when Slash comes back. As Thunder puts it, "We didn't take your weakest cats. We took your strongest."
-A somewhat darkly-humorous example: Thunder repeatedly states that Lightning Tail will be leader after he dies, even though we know Lightning Tail never actually does lead ThunderClan.
-All of Gray Wing's foster kits joining in the rescue for his son, Black Ear.
-Clear Sky pays Gray Wing back for saving Thunder and Star Flower by risking his life to save Black Ear from a monster.
-Gray Wing and his kits naming the Clans.
-Gray Wing's death, surrounded by his family.

-Thunder and Violet Dawn's relationship does not develop at all. They're just instantly in love because they find the other attractive.
-Gray Wing's death should have come a bit earlier, and the rest of the book should have been the leaders receiving their nine lives. As it is, the book doesn't quite live up to its name, unless you count the StarClan cats leading Gray Wing away
the end.
-The narrative was a bit too on the nose that Gray Wing would die, even though many people suspected it would happen before this book even came out.
-There are still a lot of details about the early Clans that we don't see (The first nine-lives ceremonies, the formation of the Warrior Code, when the naming system starts, etc) but with the sixth arc going back to the modern Clans, we'll have to wait for a seventh arc or hope to get more Super Editions about these characters.

Ultimately, it was a satisfying end to the arc. It's not perfect, but it gets far more things right than it gets wrong, and if you haven't read this arc yet, let me assure you that it ends on a good note.

What did you think?

(sneaks back in) i agree on being interested in dotc. i'm gonna start getting them soon, after i finish my tnp reread. i also have some new super editions to read though so i'm gonna have to decide what order i want to read stuff in lol but i am intrigued by the way people talk about it

DotC is really good. I think it has some of the best character development and motivations, plus some interesting plotlines and themes that don't really come up in any of the other arcs.

One thing it really gets wrong though is the romantic pairings. None of them really develop the way other arcs' did; they just sort of happen. But it's not a huge deal compared to what it gets right.

Latest Release / Re: (Speculation) Who will die?

It would almost be too tragic if Gray Wing dies, though. He raised Clear Sky's son and Turtle Tail's kits but doesn't ever get to raise his own? That would be really cruel.
He actually gets a mate of his own, and they have kits!! (Kate said this on her blog a few months ago??) Path of Stars got leaked, and further confirms this, but I won't spoil it for you.
That would definitely make it tragic then.

The Books / Re: Good Leaders, Bad Leaders

Thunder never really stood out as a leader for me. Maybe it'll be different when I re-read DotC, but it seems like the only reason he becomes a leader is because he has to form ThunderClan.

For as little as we've seen of him actually being a leader, I feel like Bramblestar did a good job in his super edition, keeping ThunderClan safe during the flooding. And I think he'll only get better now that he's realized he has to be himself as a leader, and can't just copy Firestar.

That said, I was always disappointed that Brackenfur never even got named Deputy; he would have made a good leader.

The Books / Re: Plot Holes & Out-of-Character Moments

I thought it was weird that Firestar and the rest of ThunderClan so readily believed that Ivypool had a dream from StarClan that they should take back part of the forest from ShadowClan that had been established to be basically worthless.

Also, since the E-novellas were written by Vicky and not Kate or Cherith, some words (babies, children, mama, papa) seem really out of place.

The Characters / Re: Characters and Songs

I've come to associate the Fun songs Sight of the Sun with Clear Sky and Why Am I the One with Gray Wing.

I really didn't like Yellowfang's Secret either. We had already learned all the important parts of her life in The Prophecies Begin, it really felt like the book was just one big reminder that all this stuff happened, with only a few things getting fleshed out. (I slightly remember feeling the same about Bluestar's Prophecy, but it's been long enough since I read that I don't completely remember). At least the other Super Editions added things we never learned about.
