It just got reeeaaaalllll squick real fast. Not okay, Rotwang. Not okay. And while I know it's only a strongly implied thing, he's rather opportunistic. Very not okay.

Yeah true.. :/ I don't like the implications at all. My reading/(viewing?) of the film is aligned differently, I honestly believe he wouldn't have done anything so squicky but....  it's kinda a reading which resists what the story infers.... I'm an optimist like that.. xD

I got it from the library, and read it in one day. It's pretty close to the movie except that:

Freder's grandmother is a main character, Rotwang is alcoholic, 11811 is a bigger character, and the HoYay http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HoYay between Josaphat and Freder is intense. I mean, I know it's from a different time and culture, but any chapter that begins with them lying on Josaphat's bed late at night, holding hands and looking into each other's eyes is pretty confusing. Especially when Josaphat draws him closer and tells him to go save Maria. Huh? What did I miss, boys?

Also, what interpretation?

Rotwang as an alcoholic is actually really sensible! If he was in an altered state of mind it makes perfect sense that he struggled with the Hel/robot/Maria situation.

Yeah, he started to numb the pain of losing Hel, then just cause. At one point during when he explains his robot to Fredersen, he's like "I'm drunk, drunk with the power of creation! And also literally. Heh heh." Which was a crowning moment of awesome and funny.

I'd rather be with Hel Tigey.

Yes it is a very hammy line, causing me to burst out laughing during an otherwise intense scene. Also, when he goes snooping with Fredersen, he stumbles around so loudly some of the workers get suspicious, and Fredersen has to pull him behind a rock and cuss him out, very very quietly. Rotwang just laughs drunkenly.
